Lena C. Emery has cultivated a nuanced aesthetic that draws upon her itinerant background. Her images are both delicate as well as probing. Often permeated with Japanese influences, stemming from her extensive familiarity with Japanese culture and philosophies, her work is acutely poetic.
German-born Emery grew up in Singapore, lived in Switzerland and Indonesia, before studying Fine Arts in Paris and working as an independent art director in Berlin. She is now based in London.
Emery has created thoughtfully curated imagery for brands like Dior, Stella McCartney, Helmut Lang and Lemaire. Her editorial commissions, characterised by their elegance, sensuality and imitation of narrative, have been published in titles such as The Gentlewoman, WSJ. Magazine, The New York Times Style Magazine, Purple, Pop and Vogue China.
After having contributed to books by Gestalten and Rizzoli, 2016 saw the release of Emery’s debut monograph RIE 理絵 (pr. Rhea), published by Kominek and launched at Paris Photo, and Claire de Rouen Books, London. The book opened a distinctly feminine dialogue on the act of revealing, the female gaze and the power of nudity. RIE 理絵 (pr. Rhea) was selected as one of the most engaging and exciting projects of the year by the British Journal of Photography.
Emery was selected as one of 10 emerging artists within the 16th annual Photo Issue of Vice in 2017 and was nominated for the Infinity Award (Applied Category) by the International Centre of Photography. New York in 2017, the IPG Photo Prize, the Photo District New’s 30: New and Emerging Photographers to Watch 2016 as well as the Foam Paul Huf Award 2015.
In 2016, Emery became one of the UK Winners of the Flash Forward Emerging Photographers 2016 Award selected by The Magenta Foundation.
Her work has been included in exhibitions such as Posturing: Photographing the Body in Fashion at The Ground Floor Gallery in London; UnuOunu at the Parasol Unit: Foundation for Contemporary Art, and Girl Gaze: A Frame of Mind at the Annenberg Space of Photography in New York.
